I think they do a blood test to determine if the cat has the disease, explain to the vet you dont have a huge amount of money to spend on testing, maybe they can work something out.Hope she gets better soon.

Try other vets in your area or the humane society or a shelter. |

I know IDEXX labs makes a blood test that looks like a pregnancy test two bars and the cat has leukemia, one bar and it doesn't... I would first try switching cat foods, science diet has a hypoallergenic formula in case your cat has a food allergy, it's called nature something or other, comes in a tan bag... |

yeah i was gonna say try the pound and tell them the problem. seeing as how you took the cat in and all, they may help you. cause i know the pound here will take pets and have them fixed and bring them back to you for like 25 dollars. maybe they can help find out whats the deal with the cat. good luck! |

This gave me chills, because when I was younger, we had a house full of cats that we all loved dearly as members of our family. One day, one of our cats got outside (they were not let out because there were dangerous animals around the area) and there he contracted feluke, otherwise known as feline leukemia. Or at least, that is the most plausible explanation. We did not know he had it. He ended up spreading the fatal disease to every cat we had, and all of them had to be put to sleep. I was devastated, and it still brings tears to my eyes to think about all the special cats we had that we lost to this illness, which is very contagious. Ask another vet, or many vets in your area, and see what their opinion is. Look it up on the internet as well. If your cat does indeed have it, you should have him put to sleep. It is just too risky to have him spread it to other cats. |

first of all thanks everyone for the advice and second today she coughed up a fur ball at least 6 inches long, since she has used the litter box twice and things are looking better so to speak. I did contact cat welfare and they say I can turn her in and they will test her but then I have to have $40.00 to adopt her back. Do u think the fur ball was just tying her up in nots? |

What is a large amount of money? My vet did the feline leukemia and AIDS test for the stray we recently adopted for only $35, and she gave us a $10 rebate form for the Leukemia one. You should call around and find out what the average prices are. Maybe a vet would give you a low cost test. |

WHen I searched the net for some low cost leukemia and AIDS testing, I found that the prices rarely raised above $25 for the leukemia test. MAybe your vet wants to do more than just test for leukemia. You can always find out if there is some kind of payment plan available. |
