| In some Wiccan traditions whose practices utilize ideas from Ceremonial Magic acknowledge "Elemental Beings" as "Guardians of the Watchtowers", of the four corners of the Ritual Circle. These "Elementals" are creatures that personify the qualities of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. The element of Air, in the East, is associated with "Elemental" spirits known as "Sylphs";Fire, in the South, is associated with "Salamanders";Water in the West, with "Undines"; and Earth, in the North, with "Gnomes"."Undines" are also known as nereides, oceanides, nymphs, and mermaids. They are usually female. As cited in WITCHCRAFT,MAGIC,and ALCHEMY,p.96, by de Givry, "...Solomon, son of David,other-wise "Suleiman-ibn-Daoud", becomes a legendary personage without equal in literature, even in the glowing fictions of India not only is he the richest and wisest monarch on earth, but his knowledge has made him the most powerful of men, and he commands all celestial, terrestrial, and infernal spirits; he is obeyed by the subterranean pigmies and Gnomes, and by Undines,Elves, and Salamanders".The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft,Wicca, and Neo-Paganism,pp.482-482. |
