THE GHOST OF TSALI,SMOKY MOUNTAINS,NORTH CAROLINA |
| The ghost of an Indian has been sighted in thses hills for over 150 years.Tsali was a Cherokee Indian who organized his people to resist attempts by the U.S. government to resettle their tribe on a reservation in Oklahoma. In 1838, cavalrymen under the command of General Winfield Scott started rounding up the Indians and forcing them to march to Oklahoma. Many died on the march or were killed(murdered) by the soldiers for resisting, but Tsali and a band of followers escaped into the North Carolina mountains. General Scott sent word if Tsali surrendered the rest of his band of followers could remain free. When Tsali did surrended, Scott had his shot by a firing squad.Tsali's ghost appears in October and early November in the evening mists of the valleys and hilltops of the Great Smoky range in Northwestern North Carolina.Historical Marker Q3 tells his story.Haunted Places,pp.318-319. |
