Daughter of 14 months had a 50/50 chance to make it through the night |
| A miracle happen the year of 1982...I was a single mom, raising my daughter on my own, in Arlington Texas...About a week before my daughter Autumn got really really sick and almost died, she woke up one morning runing a low grade fever, and then a cough...As, the day went on her fever got to 103 and she was having a really hard time getting around...So, the next morning I called her doctor, and brought her in to see him...After examing her, he told me she had a virus and wrote me an antibiatic...I got the medication filled and went back home...Her condition steady got worse and worse as the next few days pasted...I called her doctor several times, and the response I got back was keep giving her the medication, and she will starting feeling better soon...Well, on the fourth day, Autumn couldn't walk, set up, and when you picked her up, she would scream...I didn't know what to do, except take her back to the doctor...The doctor looked at her again, and told me that it was just the virus, and keep giving her the medication...Well, later on that evening, my cousin June came over, because I had told her about Autumn...While June was there, she said we need to take her to the hospital, because there was something deafly wrong with Autumn, and it was not a virus...While, picking Autumn up to take her to the hospital, she went into secures, and passed out in my arms...June rushed Autumn and me to the hospital...When we got into the doors, the nurses took her straight back and started running test...They finally did a spinal on her, and told me that it looks like your daughter has Spinal Meninghus...So, they called in a Specialist by the name of Connie Malinge...She came in and looked at the test results, and confirmed that Autumn did have Spinal meninghus, and that she might not make it through the night, and if she did she might have brain damage with the secures she was having...Because it was cutting off oxgen to the brain...All we could do was wait, to see if the medication they were giving her would work... I called my Mom, who at that time lived in Gulfport Mississippi, and my Father that lived in Tyler Texas...June my cousin, Thank God she was there...She helped me when I didn't think I could make it through the night, she was my strength that night...June, called Churches, and family members, and I don't know who else...But, that night I had people all over the place saying prayers for my Little Baby...She laid there so helpless, not moving, just her right hand, which would move up and down...She was in a comma!!!I laid in the bed next to her all night not sleeping, praying, and holding on to her right hand that kept moving..When, I held her hand her hand would stop moving...I think that was one of the longest nights of my life...Dr Connie Malinge stayed there all night and kept checking on Autumn, as well as the nurses...Autumn and I were put in Quantin, because she had Infectus Spinal Meninghus, the worse kind, and at that time, not too many people ever survived it.... The next day, Autumn was still in a comma and still laying there so helpless...I never left her side...About noon that day, my Mom arrived at the hospital...Then, a little bit later, my Dad and my Brother arrived...The staff didn't want anyone coming into the room, because we had been put under Quantin, and they were afraid that they would get it...So, the staff made them put on gloves, mask, and special clothing, before intering the room...I would say it was sometime around 3 or 4 pm that afternoon, before Autumn opened her eyes....I was still by herside when she opened her eyes, I grab her as close as I could, and just cried with joy...I knew then that she was going to be all right...She put her little arms around my neck and wouldn't let go...She still couldn't set up, or moving any part of her body, except arms and legs...All she did was cry, still holding on to my neck for dear life, it seemed....Finally, my Mom came over and laid down beside her, to give me a break, so I could eat, and get cleaned up some...As the day and the night passed, it seemed like Autumn was getting better and stronger...The next morning, when she woke up, she told me she was hungry...So, I rang the nurses station and ask if she could eat...They had to call her doctor, and the doctor said if she wants food then bring her food...Well, the nurse came in with breakfast, there was eggs, sausage, cereal, and toast...Autumn, ate every bite, then ask for move...The nurse, looked at me, and said do you think we should get her more food..I said it couldn't hurt...So, the nurse brought her in another breakfast, just like the other one, and Autumn ate every bite...The nurse couldn't do believe it...As, the days passed, I had people coming up to Autumn's room that I didn't know...Wanting to see the miracle baby, churches sending closes, food, and cards...Everyday Autumn got stronger and stronger...On the fourth day, we were out of Quantin, and she could get out of her room...Autumn had to learn how to crawl and walk, all over again...She was strong, and she recovered quickly...We stayed in the hospital for 15 days, before they released her...Dr Malange ran a CT Scan before we left the hospital to make sure Autumn didn't have any brain damage...Autumn was truly blessed, she had no brain damage, and she had a fully recovered.... I would love to Thank Arlington Community Hospital on Matlock, and all the nurses, doctors, and staff, for being so wonderful and all of there help...I would especailly like to think Dr. Connie Malange, for being such a wonderful Doctor, and all of the hard work she did in helping my daughter get better...I also, want to say thanks to all of the wonderful people, who's prayers I believe to this day saved my daughter...I could never thank these people enough and I am sorry for not thanking you until now.... |

*sniffles* I am so glad she is alright!!! I cant imagine how scary that must have been, but Im sure with you there it helped her recover as well. This was a great story, and thanks for sharing. I hope Autumn is doing well! :) *huge hugs* |

wow, when i was 3 years old i had the exact eprienc. i almost died i was very sick. but no brain damage and i am healthy now. please give your daughter autumn a big hug from me cyndi. i really care about the little ones in this world. cyndi. |

spinal meningitis is a disease (caused by a bacteria) that attacks your spine. It feels like you have the flu except you get a rash and an extremely high fever. It is often contracted among young children and college students. (because there are large numbers of them in close contact.) And that doctor that originally prescribed your daughter antibiotics for a virus was an idiot....antiobiotics attack bacteria not viruses...it's why we haven't found a cure for the common cold....a cold is a virus that can't be treated...you can only treat the symptoms. |
