How we got rid of a poltergeist.

You're probably rolling your eyes at this point, saying yeah, sure you had a poltergeist. Well we had something so I'll start at the beginning.

We lived in military housing at Ft. Knox. We lived in a two story house dating back to the 40's. We lived there for about 4 years. Having moved quiet a lot with my husband being in the military, I've lived places where things have happened and quiet places where nothing happened. That house was quiet the first several years we lived there.

My husband was gone a lot. I use to read my Stephen King and Dean Koonz books before going to bed, turn off the light and go direcetly to sleep. I was never scared, never heard strange or unexplained noises.

My husband was about 6 months into his 1 year tour in Korea when things first began to get interesting.

My daughters and I had been out to eat and came home late one night to find the tv and an upstairs light on. We knew we had turned everything off, so I got a neighbor to go through the house to check things out. He found nothing, so we assumed we were wrong about turning every thing off.

My youngest daughter who was about 4, began complaining about "the lights" in her room at night. One night I got up about 3 in the morning to use the bathroom, glanced in her room and saw several lights around her bed. Something about it really scared me and sent me scurrying back to bed without using the bathroom.

Than both my oldest daughter (who was about 12 or 13 at the time) and I began having nightmares. I'm not much of a dreamer so the fact that I was having pretty severe nightmares was strange and the fact that we both suddenly began having them at the same time was bizarre. The dreams were violent and bloody. Extremely unusual for me to dream stuff like that.

One night Kayla said she woke-up to our dog, who was sleeping with her, staring at something toward the foot of her bed and growling. She said she felt something sit on the edge of the bed. I also had this experience, I felt something sit at the foot of the bed, I remember looking up because I thought my daughter had come into the room. I sprang up and turned on the light I was so startled...and I wasn't asleep yet or even near being asleep so I wasn't dreaming.

I began hearing knocking coming from inside my closet.

Kayla had never slept in my room before, even when she was little, but she began sleeping on the floor beside my bed.

We would hear things fall upstairs (we had wood floors) and roll across the floor. When I went upstairs to investigate, nothing was ever out of place.

As we walked past one upstairs closet, if the doors were cracked open (they were the sliding type doors) a breeze seemed to come from that closet, blowing the clothes briefly out at us.

Just talking about "whatever" it was seemed to excite it. When my friend and I were sitting in my living room and I was telling her about what was going on, we heard something fall and bounce across the floor above us. I'll never forget the look on my friends face, her eyes were huge.

I remember typing something about all this on this site and as I did I would hear things fall upstairs. Someone on this site (I forget who) told me it sounded like we had a poltergeist, especially considering my daughters age. I did some research on poltergeists and found they thrive on attention.

So one night while we were out I told my daughter we were going to IGNORE whatever it was. She was going to start sleeping in her own bed again and we were no longer going to talk about the stuff or acknowledge that anything was happening.

At first things got worse. Something would happen and I remember my daughter would look at me helplessly, I would shake my head at her and resume normal conversation. And it worked. It took several weeks, but things began to taper off. No more nightmares or things rolling around upstairs or clothes blowing out of closets at us.

The thing did have it's last little joke on me. One night I was cleaning the kitchen and turned around in time to see a bottle of cleaner slide across the counter. I casually walked over, felt the counter to see if it was wet (it wasn't), I walked out of the kitchen and watched some tv. That was the last thing that happened.

I have a 7 year old. I HOPE she doesn't attract anything like that, but if she does, I know how to deal with it.

UnwantedTreasures 3/4/2005 10:23:00 AM Wow what a post!! It sure sounds like you had a poltergeist.
kaymad 3/4/2005 11:11:00 AM Angel, I'm pretty sure that's what it was. Around the time this started my daughter had also been messing with a ouija board by herself, which I broke to bits and threw away, but whatever it was, ignoring it made it stop so that's all that counts.
trust no one 3/4/2005 11:12:00 AM That is CREEPY!!!
An Angels Voice 3/4/2005 11:26:00 AM Wow thats really interesting. Glad you got rid of it.
Leon Krahe 3/4/2005 2:24:00 PM That is really some strange stuff, but definately glad it is gone! Glad I never messed around with the Ouija board I made myself a few years ago (after reading stories simular to this but without the good ending, chickened out and destroyed it before I ever tried using it!) Good thing you got rid of that too.
JerseyDevil 3/4/2005 4:54:00 PM Woah! Thank you for sharing that with us. Very interesting that simply ignoring made the spirits move on.
kaymad 3/4/2005 8:57:00 PM Rebel Spirit, I will never allow another Ouija into my house! I still don't know if there was a connection to what was going on, but I sure don't want to find out. We live in a brand new house now and I want it to stay nice and boring.
kaymad 3/4/2005 9:04:00 PM I'm not that great of a writer as you've probably already guessed, so I didn't capture the pure terror my daughter and I both felt during this time...I should have had Kayla write this, she is much better than I am.
Lefty 4/13/2005 6:35:00 PM Wow that sounds just like my aunts house used to be before she got rid of her "spirit". I was afraid to even go to her house. If you would even mention anything slightly paranormal the activity in the house would just skyrocket..Things would start happening right away. I didnt believe it until the lights started going on and off on us..lol They had to start going to church and stuff all the time in order to get rid of it.. Im glad you got rid of yours.. it can be really creepy. 80)
Abigail-1 5/7/2005 8:12:00 PM Wow, it gave me chills when you said something knocking from inside your closet. That would FREAK ME OUT and I'm 22.. lol. You are right that poltergeists thrive on attention. I read that they're not actually ghosts but your daughters telepathically doing things (such as moving, etc) and they usually happen when teenage girls are around the house. Sounds to me like you might have an actual ghost. But if you don't pay attention to them, they ususally move on to something else, because they get bored.
Ecco 5/9/2005 10:52:00 AM Get the house blessed. Either by a priest or wiccan. Sage or holy water, doesn't matter just get it blessed.
ImaginaryLight 5/21/2005 8:06:00 PM 0_o Creepy....Thanx for sharing. :)
Cherry18 9/22/2005 5:59:00 PM Usually when things like that happen its for a reason. People tend to misconstrue evil spirts for ghosts, poltergeists etc. It's very dangerous when evil spirts start to torment. Find the reason why and fix it. Children are the weak that is why attack them. I don't know if you are religious but rest in prayer for you and your young.
