The tower of Babel was the world's first mega city.

In the book of Genesis the tower of Babel was the biggest structure in the world at the time. It was also the first structure of the world at the time. It's because humans were trying to reach to the heavens that God came down and confused the language of humans. Which is the reason that we have the languages of the world today.

Wiley™ Wicked˛© 3/4/2006 4:14:00 PM Its also why the term Nimrod is used or if something is total Babel. :)
ladyspiritguide 3/4/2006 4:28:00 PM too many Nimrods in this world, IMO :)
fearfactor 3/4/2006 5:07:00 PM that must of been some sight. how do you get food and water up that high, let alone continue to battle the air/elements. is there any orgin of where the tower of babel took place on earth? David/Fearfactor
Wiley™ Wicked˛© 3/4/2006 5:28:00 PM Lots of speculation. There are many buildings though just like it. Just look up Ziggurats that should give you some basic info.
nightscent 3/4/2006 7:12:00 PM i've heard this before but never about Babel being the first mega city
BLAH. 3/4/2006 7:44:00 PM Heaven must be pretty close, then, if God freaked out about people trying to get there. The reason it must be close is because this page implies that it would be pretty impossible to build a tower to Heaven, unless people back in the day had superhuman qualities.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth%27s_atmosphere
Miss Kaja 3/4/2006 11:33:00 PM Sorry but nope. For starters the 'Tower of Babel' in the Christian sense isnt right. Many ziggurats (sorry spelling) or 'tower' type temples were actually designed after mountains where it is speculated the Sumerians (Babylonian's ancestors) originated from. Also they werent trying to literally 'reach' God...to those Pagans there was no need: Gods could be represented in Statues and roleplay (Priestesses and Priest especially the Sacred Marriage.) ALSO by that point in history other languages ALREADY existed: Sumerian, Akkadian, Hebrew?, Elamite, Hittie language, Egypts language, and other various 'countries' as well. So not true (historically. Go nuts believing what you like faith wise.) Also the title doesnt make snese. The temple wasn't a mega city though it was the hub of the community. And it wasnt the first: to knowledge Uruk was probably the first 'city' and maybe in 'mega' talk Eridu or Kish (all Sumerian btw.) You have odd posts :p but good for you LOL! Sorry Im tired I hope I made sense.
Wiley™ Wicked˛© 3/5/2006 12:40:00 AM Well it is speculated that some Ziggurats where designed as a "Stairway to heaven" for the Gods to use to come down. It is also speculated though that the Tower of Babel was made out of discontent for God and to even do war with the heavens. Its all speculation.
JesusRules 3/5/2006 12:41:00 AM Genesis 11:1 "Now the whole earth had one language and the same words." This is why the tower was able to be made really easily, imagine all the world having the same language at the same time:O But God came down v.7 to confuse the language so that they wont continue to do things together like this.
RodTodThisIsGod 3/5/2006 2:57:00 AM Fortunately god is no match for our space missions.
Two Spirit 3/5/2006 7:39:00 AM To the first people mentioned in the Bible, all people may well have spoken the same language, since they only knew those who were in the same region as they were. If one thoroughly reads the Bible though, they soon understand that the Bible only covers a small region of the Earth, and that is the region around where the people of the Bible lived. Evidence of early man have been found all around the world, and there is no way the people of the Bible could know of other people in other places, or of the languages they spoke. The Bible is a good guide for living, but there are many questions as to it's historical accuracy, especially the further back one goes.
whyNOT askwhy? 3/5/2006 7:42:00 AM in reference to the authors last comment, imagine what might have been accomplished if God hadn't confused the people... interesting thought...
Miss Kaja 3/5/2006 9:44:00 AM Two Spirit is pretty close on that. The people I refrenced all lived very 'close' (not as far away as say Japan) to where the Biblical people ended up and for surely there was already two different languages by the time the Jews were around: Akkadian and Sumerian. The Bible as said was written by people who didnt really know all these dif languages so they may have thought it was all the same (especially because a lot of higher up citizens were bi to tri lingual) but it wasnt. The Bible has an instresting history of 'mishearing' names LOL! For years scholars wondered why Sumer was never mentioned in the Bible because Abraham (hope I got him right) came from Ur according to the Bible but the word 'Sumer' was never mentioned. Then they realized it may have been the once mentioned 'Shumer' because thats how the word would sound to non native speakers. Uruk also became Erech etc. As said believe the Bible all you like but to present it as an ancient belief is wrong (Babylon and Sumer predated the Bible though they did write a lot of its stories like the flood one for example) because it has the facts wrong on those people's beliefs. The Bible Im sure is a lovely book but you cant hand a quote to me out of it as fact vs what the Sumerians and Babylonians (who predated the Bible and Christ mind you) had to say about themselves and what archalogist have also found to be true or false about them (everything I stated: true.)
JesusRules 3/5/2006 10:42:00 AM Queen Crazy hand me a quote that the Sumerians and Babylonians wrote before the bible.
Miss Kaja 3/5/2006 11:25:00 AM LOL!!!!!!!! Im sorry but as a Christian I would hope you knew the history of your own faith! ONE quote? The Sumerians had many hundreds of tablets as did the Babylonians and Assyrians. I'll do you one better: linky time. http://etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/ you can read as much as you like (now btw thats all strictly Sumerian who roughly were thousands of years before the Bible and Jesus.) And to really prove my point heres a link to the translation of the flood story: http://etcsl.orinst.ox.ac.uk/cgi-bin/etcsl.cgi?text=t.1.7.4&charenc=j# Im sorry that was just funny to me :) but if you're willing to learn real history I do applaud you :D
Miss Kaja 3/5/2006 11:33:00 AM Hmm reading that link I realized it is a lot less detailed then the Babylonian version but thats the 'oldest' version so no purer can you get ;).
Miss Kaja 3/5/2006 12:25:00 PM http://myusm.com/usm444722.html there I did a little research for you :). I actually like this post you made it made me think and remember some facts my little brain has been fuzzy on lately LOL! So thanks :)
JesusRules 3/5/2006 12:52:00 PM Queen Crazy why don't you have a book before you showing the greatness of these quotes that have been passed down from generations like those of the scritpure?
Miss Kaja 3/5/2006 2:01:00 PM Actually I have several books; but its just easier to link to a site that has everything word for word. What type of books would you like on the subject? I think the neatest one I recently read was part of Times Lost Civilizations called 'Sumer: Cities of Eden'. Sameul Noah Kramer has many fine books as well. LOL sounds like someone doesnt like history...sorry but just by your comments you seem like your happy with close mindeness.
Miss Kaja 3/5/2006 2:03:00 PM Also in relation the the 'why wasnt it passed down' part thats because no one knew Sumer or Babylon were REAL tell the late 1800s. Babylon's name had lived on but Sumer's hadnt. Most of these writings came to light in the 1900s-1960s. But then the Iraq wars of the 80s and well now have put a hold on it. So your answer is it was lost. Similiar to why the Gnostic Books were lost tell the 50s ;)
Wiley™ Wicked˛© 3/5/2006 2:37:00 PM How about you yourself reread Genesis. There is alot of quotes in there dealing with other people since time began. Adam and Eve where not the only people. Just the first created perfectly in his image. Remember when Cain was to leave he was afraid the "Other" people would surely kill him. If you want quotes look in the thing your quoting for them.
JesusRules 3/5/2006 4:45:00 PM thank you everybody, i've obtained the information i needed, Lord bless
